Here are a few things to keep in mind before you or your children down a handful of gummy vitamins, according to a recent article in Women’s Health magazine.
You could actually be consuming a lot of calories and sugar.
“Most commercial gummy vitamins contain about 7 to 8 calories per gummy,” according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “That’s about the same as regular gummy bears.” The same is true for sugar—you’ll get 1 to 2 grams per gummy. Sure, it doesn’t sound like a lot, but let’s say you stuff 8 or 10 in your mouth—that’s an extra 80 calories and 20 grams of sugar right there…in gummy vitamins. Gummy vitamins are not snacks. Gummy vitamins can also lead to dental decay because the bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar and can leave behind acid on the teeth.
You might have to run for the bathroom.
One ingredient your stomach might not like is sugar alcohol included in most gummies. Lots of people spend the day running to the bathroom from having this ingredient. That’s especially true if you have too many gummies in one sitting. There are many more healthy options than taking gummy vitamins. The very name reflects the feeling of “candy” rather than something that is healthy for you. Do your homework – labels matter!
